Sainz warns Toro Rosso practice showing "counts for little"

Carlos Sainz says that his Toro Rosso team's strong practice showing in Monaco on Thursday "counts for little," as he expects rival squads to make major gains in time for qualifying.

The Spaniard ended second practice sixth fastest, one place behind teammate Daniil Kvyat, as both Toro Rosso drivers finished ahead of Ferrari as well as midfield rivals Williams and Force India.

But Sainz says that nothing can be taken for granted, as he expects other teams to up their game considerably on Saturday.

“It was a bit of a surprise for us to be in front of teams like Ferrari or McLaren," said Sainz. "Unfortunately this is just Thursday, and it counts for little, like my P5 in Barcelona on Friday.

"I’m convinced teams like Ferrari, Force India, Williams and McLaren will turn it up on Saturday so we need to be careful.

"Drivers are maybe leaving two tenths, four tenths [on the table], and there are always set-ups to improve, so who knows?

"But hopefully on Saturday I can push it a bit more, find a bit more performance everywhere."

Kvyat, however, struck a more upbeat tone about Toro Rosso's prospects of a strong showing in Monaco: "We expected this type of track would be good for us and we confirmed it today.

"Straight out of the box, the feeling was quite positive. We hope to maintain and even improve this feeling for Saturday, [although] we know there are some areas we can maximise.

"So we'll try to do that and come up on Saturday in the best shape possible."
