Fernando Alonso said on Thursday that he would decide his future in September, in a way which led many in the F1 paddock to conclude that he was sending a message to the new F1 management team that they might like to intervene to ensure that one of the biggest stars remains in the sport in a winning car.

Today Ross Brawn ruled out intervening in the driver market with teams, to broker a move for Alonso, or any other driver.

This is something Bernie Ecclestone use to do in the past, moving his chess pieces around. Nigel Mansell's ill fated 1995 move to McLaren, Michael Schumacher's move from Benetton to Ferrari in 1996 being good examples, also moves like Riccardo Patrese into Benetton in 1993.

"Where do you stop if you start manipulating things?" asked Brawn. "I know in the past some people did that, but it's not something we would particularly want to do. But anything we can do to help McLaren and Honda to improve, we would do it," he told BBC Radio 5.

Brawn said that he has already had conversations with Honda to try to help them.

Brawn was a team principal of the Honda F1 team before it withdrew from F1 in 2008. He bought the team from Honda and it became Brawn GP, winning the 2009 world championships.
