Ron Dennis couldn't help laughing at Fernando Alonso sunbathing - will it still be funny in 2016?

Ron Dennis has shed light on one of the most talked about moments of the year.

Ron Dennis has shed light on one of the most talked about moments of the year.

The veteran McLaren boss admitted that he laughed when he saw the images of Fernando Alonso sunbathing in a marshal’s chair after his McLaren broke down in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was forced to stop his car in Q1 at Interlagos with yet another problem with his Honda power unit and was pictured soaking up the rays by the side of the track before he hitched a lift back to the pitlane in a medical car.

Alonso’s actions quickly became a source of humour on the Internet as fans altered the shot to place the double world champion in unusual, often unpleasant, situations. But Dennis, who is famously obsessed with his team’s image, explained in an interview with the official F1 website that he did enjoy the picture.

He said: “I chuckled to myself, to be honest. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of humour. And Fernando is as hard-working as he is talented, be in no doubt of that.”

Dennis also took the time to describe the improvements he has seen in his driver’s personality since the pair fell out in the 2007 season during Alonso’s first spell with McLaren.

He said: “He’s matured enormously since he last drove for us, eight years ago, and he’s now one of the most complete drivers I’ve ever had the privilege of working with.

“He has what I often refer to as the four e’s that all racing drivers should aspire to cultivate: energy, enthusiasm, expertise and experience.”

Alonso also received support from his old boss at Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, after the Scuderia’s current president, Sergio Marchionne, claimed that Sebastian Vettel was already more popular with the Italian team than the Spaniard had ever been during his five years with the marque.

Marchionne, speaking at Ferrari’s pre-Christmas media event, said: "At the beginning of his adventure in Maranello, Vettel was already more a 'Ferrarista' than Alonso was after five years with the team.

"He is a great boost for us. At the Christmas dinner with the team, he spoke in Italian – after having prepared his speech and learned it almost by heart. He has joined Ferrari immediately with the right mindset."

But di Montezemolo, who spoke at the Autosprint Golden Helmets Award, explained that Alonso’s frustrations at narrowly missing out on two world titles during his time at Ferrari had damaged his relationship with the team.

Di Montezemolo said: "Alonso would have been more [a Ferrarista] if Ferrari, in 2010, had won a world championship that was easier to win than to lose.

"And if in the last race of the season you lose the world championship twice, these things need to be understood."
