Renault fears there is no quick fix for the problems that hit Red Bull and Toro Rosso during the Chinese Grand Prix.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo had to have a new engine fitted after qualifying, while teammate Daniil Kvyat retired from the race when his engine failed on lap 16.

Max Verstappen's Toro Rosso was also hit by engine problems near the end of the race when he looked set for an eighth-place finish.

After the race, Renault took the blame for all the problems during the weekend.

"As a company, we hold our hands up when it's our problem, and today that was the case," said managing director Cyril Abiteboul.

Although Renault was hopeful a solution to the problem could be find in time for the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend, Abiteboul told France's Canal Plus there can be "no solution within the next six weeks".

"Engine technology is not something you can change overnight after a bad race," he said.

"We have a plan for the use of our tokens this year, so we should not rush headlong into decisions that may not be the best for the long term."

According to Canal Plus, a fault with the piston design is the cause of the problem.
