Red Bull set for Renault upgrade boost in Singapore

Red Bull's hopes of getting back on terms with Mercedes and Ferrari will be boosted at the Singapore Grand Prix, with Renault set to introduce an engine upgrade

The Milton Keynes-based team had little chance of fighting with its main rivals for a podium spot at the Italian GP, with Monza's long straights exposing a power deficit that Renault still has.

But with the tight layout of the Singapore circuit already expected to better suit Red Bull's chassis, there is also set to be a performance boost from the powerunit too that could put Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen in the hunt for victory.

When asked by Motorsport.com about potential updates for the next race, Red Bull boss Christian Horner said: “We have a few little bit and pieces, and I hear there may be a couple of tokens spent as well [by Renault]. But really now the factory is pretty much focused on 2017, so little bits and pieces but nothing major.”

As well as spending two or three tokens to boost engine performance, there is a chance that fuel supplier Total could bring new products too to deliver even more power.

Monza struggles expected

Horner said it was no surprise that Red Bull had struggled at Monza to match Mercedes and Ferrari, with the circuit layout not good for its package.

“I think this is a pure horsepower circuit – with slow speed corners and long straights,” he said. “So it is a very clear delta of where things are at. So I don't think it is a surprise to anyone.

“But we are in a better position than we were 12 months ago. We have still some way to go to close that gap but we know there are circuits coming up that should hopefully suit more the characteristics of our car.

“Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Mexico, theoretically, are all tracks that should be reasonable for us.”
