Qatar Grand Prix driver ratings

Qatar was a virtual unknown for most as Formula 1 made its inaugural visit to the Gulf state, and tyre management quickly emerged as an even more critical factor than normal. Perhaps then it should come as no surprise that two of the championship's elder statesmen produced standout drives

Lewis Hamilton – 10

Completely dominant from qualifying onwards – taking pole by a massive 0.455 seconds even before Verstappen's quickest Q3 lap was deleted post-session. He made sure to avoid being caught out at the start with his move to cover off Gasly and then disappeared. Was smart to mostly avoid clattering kerbs and risk a puncture, which suggests he could have been even further ahead in this masterclass.

Max Verstappen – 8

Can't score higher because of his big queue Q3 error. Acknowledged he saw Gasly's stricken car, which means he has no excuse for missing the yellow flags too. His race was brilliant thanks to a great start and simple passes on Gasly and Alonso. Did damage his wing on the Turn 14 and 15 kerbs early but didn't think he'd have caught Hamilton anyway.
