Good weather greeted today's warm up session for the Spanish Grand Prix and as soon as the pit lane was open there were plenty of cars on track to put in installation laps. Jacques Villeneuve set the first time of the session for BAR which was soon usurped by the Sauber pair, first Felipe Massa then Nick Heidfeld going fastest. The Ferraris were out on the circuit, Rubens Barrichello taking to the top of the times with a 1:20.495.

A fairly quiet session as due to the amount of testing teams do here the drivers are mostly very familiar with the track. The Williams' were in the top ten times as was Jordan's Takuma Sato and the Renault of Jenson Button and towards the end of the session Arrows showed strongly again. In the last five minutes Michael Schumacher's Ferrari ground to a halt on the track; somewhat surprising given how reliable the F2002 has been so far this season.

Minardi continued to suffer front wing problems: after both Mark Webber and Alex Yoong losing wings in the last couple of days, Webber had a repeat performance, losing his front wing going down the main straight. Minardi had flown parts back to their base at Faenza overnight in an effort to solve the problem but it seems they haven't. Enrique Bernoldi came to a halt on the track for Arrows' first problem of the weekend, but a quiet session over all. Final top six classification: Barrichello, Heidfeld, M. Schumacher, Massa, Frentzen, R. Schumacher.
