Jaguar's Antonio Pizzonia found himself the surprise leader of the times in the first free practice for the Canadian Grand Prix after rain aborted half of the session. The Brazilian set a 1:16.621 early on, ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Michael Schumacher before the weather interfered. The remainder of the session saw little action.
There was activity as soon as the session opened and Montoya was the first driver to set a time. The Williams man clocked a 1:17.653 ahead of Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen in the opening stages. Olivier Panis was next to the top, the Toyota just a couple of tenths faster than Montoya but the Colombian immediately snatched it back.
Pizzonia was next to set the fastest time, which he then improved on it by a couple of tenths, the first to go under the 1:17 bracket with 1:16.621. Teammate Mark Webber was also in the top six early on along with the Schumacher brothers. The McLarens, Toyotas and the Jordan of Ralph Firman completed the top ten.
Twenty-five minutes into the session the rain started to fall and things slowed down. Rubens Barrichello was lapping in the low 1:18s to edge into the top ten but Michael aborted his lap into the pits. Heinz-Harald Frentzen skipped the chicane, the Sauber unsettled on the wet track.
Jenson Button had a bit of a slide and some drivers ventured out only to duck straight back in again. The Renaults again left it late to appear but by that time it was mainly tyre testing that was going on in the difficult conditions. The pair clocked times in the low 1:30s.
An abortive session with no chance to tell who was performing well. The Renaults never saw a dry track and most of the field had only done a handful of laps before the rain came down. Final top eight classification: Pizzonia, Montoya, M. Schumacher, Webber, Panis, R. Schumacher, Firman, Raikkonen.
