Olivier Panis, who dropped out of an active racing role for the 2000 Formula One season to test with the West McLaren-Mercedes team, has signed a contract with BAR to return to F1 racing next year.

BAR, which has a Honda works contract for engines and chassis development, has been looking for a replacement for Ricardo Zonta to partner 1997 World Champion, Jacques Villeneuve.

"It's going to be a completely different experience," said Panis. "It's a new challenge and I'm so happy that I'll be racing again. I've worked with Honda before, so it's nice to come back to them."

Panis, who turns 34 in two weeks, drove with Ligier (which later turned into Prost) from 1994 to 1999, with Renault, then Mugen-Honda and finally Peugeot engines. He won the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix. and scored a grand total of 56 points with the team, with a best result of 16 points and eighth place in the Championship in 1995.
