GP2 champion Jolyon Palmer will make his debut with the Lotus Formula One team in this week's test in Barcelona.
The Briton joined the Enstone-based outfit as a reserve driver for this year, and will get what the team said was a "significant number" of Friday practice outings during the season.
But he will get his first taste of the new Mercedes-powered E23 on Friday, taking over from Pastor Maldonado, who will kick off work tomorrow.
Maldonado will return to the wheel of the car on Saturday, with teammate Romain Grosjean completing the work on Sunday.
