Jolyon Palmer has been added to the list of drivers taking grid penalties at the Japanese Grand Prix after Renault elected to fit new engine components ahead of final practice.

The British driver has taken his fifth internal combustion engine, and his sixth turbocharger and MGU-H – which means he will take a 20-place grid penalty.

The decision by Renault to fit new engines for Palmer and Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz this weekend has raised concerns that other drivers – including potentially Red Bull – will need to take extra engines before the end of the campaign.

Palmer is the fourth driver to take grid penalties in Japan, with Fernando Alonso and Sainz also taking new engines, and Valtteri Bottas requiring a new gearbox.
