No Haas 2017 line-up decision until after Monza

Haas boss Gunther Steiner says the team will not make a decision about its driver line-up for next season until after the Italian Grand Prix in September.

The American outfit had a strong start to the campaign with a decent haul of points early on, and after some more difficult races, it has made gains more recently in better understanding tyre performance.

Although the worst of its problems now appear to be behind it, Steiner has insisted the focus remains fully on its car – with its driver line-up not a consideration at the moment.

While Romain Grosjean has a deal in place for next year, the fate of his teammate is not guaranteed, with Esteban Gutierrez understood to only be on a one-year deal.

But, on the back of some early-season bad luck for Gutierrez, who was also held back by illness, Steiner thinks it only fair that he is given more time to show he deserves a fresh deal.

“We agreed between us that we don't really want to talk about drivers until the European season is over,” explained Steiner. “We need to see what we have got.

“I think now to evaluate Esteban wouldn't be fair because he had a few races where the circumstances didn't help him – like an accident, or the car broke down. So we said we don't put pressure on anybody.

"If we start to talk to people then speculation starts and people get insecure, and you don't get the best out of drivers.

"We want to see what happens until Monza and then we see.”

With the driver market looking pretty secure at the front of the grid, Haas could benefit from shuffles in the middle ranking teams – with the likes of Kevin Magnussen and Felipe Massa potentially becoming available.

Steiner added: “We are in no hurry. We know what we can do, we know we are safe for next year so we don't have to panic or anything.

"When you are confident in what you are doing, you normally don't try to do anything radical.”
