Villeneuve Sees Frentzen As Biggest Threat
Jacques Villeneuve has admitted that he sees his team mate as his biggest threat for this year. Villeneuve said "Your biggest threat is always your team mate because you are working with the same car and same people, I expect McLaren, Ferrari and Michael Schumacher to be competitive but there could be a lot of other teams."
Williams Launch FW20
Williams have launched their first all new post Adrian Newey car. The FW20 has been designed by Gavin Fischer and Geoff Willis who have both been at Williams some time. In early testing, the car has been around a second a lap quicker than any other 1998 car to date.
Williams Expected To Announce Second Test Driver
Williams are expected to confirm that Max Wilson will join Juan Pablo Montoya in testing duties for the team.
Testing Next Week
Next week sees most teams off to Barcelona (Montmelo) in what will be the first real testing session of the 1998 pre season. Williams, Jordan, Sauber, Benetton, Prost, Stewart, Tyrrell and Minardi are all scheduled to be there so if you are in the area drop in. Ferrari could also be there, but at the moment it is still unclear if they will attend.
Panis And Trulli Happy With AP01
Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli have both pronounced themselves happy with the new Prost Peugeot AP01. Both drivers were impressed with the new offering from Peugeot - the A16 V10.
Ferrari Suffer Teething Trouble
All teams suffer teething problems with new cars, but only Ferrari seem to attract such interest from the media and public. Initial test runs last week showed that the exhaust system caused the rear suspension to heat up. A new revised exhaust has been designed and fitted and should be tested later this week.
New McLaren Expected Soon
The last car to be launched this season will be the McLaren MP4/13 which is expected to be unveiled on February 5th. The new car (much awaited) is the first McLaren to have input from Adrian Newey. Until the MP4/13 is launched Coulthard and Hakkinen will continue tyre testing on adapted MP4/12 cars.
Sauber Have First Tests
Sauber have had their shake down tests at Fiorano and Johnny Herbert said he was encouraged by his first drive in the C17. The car will get it's first real test at Barcelona next week.
French GP Chance
The French GP may be in with a chance (a slim one) of being saved.. The French national assembly voted for a bill which basically gives the FIA sanctioned broadcaster rights to screen the whole race, while other broadcasters may screen excerpts. French sports minister Marie-George Buffet said "The door is now open for the race to be rescheduled"
