After his big shunt at Silverstone last week, Juan Pablo Montoya has given the HANS system his approval. The controversial device has met with some complaints from drivers since it was made compulsory this season, Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello and Minardi's Justin Wilson both had problems in races with HANS. But after burying his Williams in a tyre wall in testing recently, Montoya is quite happy with the safety system.

"When I turned right for the second Becketts the car oversteered a bit and suddenly it was gone," said the Colombian. "I think I was doing around 300 kmph when I went off and then I crashed into the tyres at about 250-270."

"The HANS worked really well and actually held my head because the impact was very hard. I ended up underneath the tyre barrier and it took some time for me to get out of the car. Now I'm fine, just a bit sore in my back and elbows. I'm a believer. It's good."

Barrichello was exempt from using HANS in Malaysia after he blamed the device for causing his crash in Melbourne. Since then the FIA has ruled that if a driver has problems with HANS, he must be replaced -- no more exemptions for any reason. Montoya was initially one of the voices of discontent about the system but has now changed his mind.

"I was complaining last year when we were trying it," he admitted. "They kind of figured out that the problem with the HANS was with the car so they modified the back of the new chassis so I fitted comfortably and to be honest with you, I didn't even feel it."

"I did the first two tests in the FW25 with the HANS and then I went back to last year's car, the FW24, without HANS and it felt quite weird actually, driving without it."
