Juan Pablo Montoya survived a high-speed accident late this afternoon while testing at the Silverstone circuit in England.

The Williams driver had just started his second flying lap of a run at 3.45pm GMT when he lost control of his car at the exit of the high-speed Becketts corner, half a mile into the lap.

The car quickly spun round and skimmed over a gravel trap before hitting the barrier hard, coming to rest actually under the tyres. Marshals quickly attended the scene to extract Montoya.

The front of the car was very badly damaged; both wheels and suspension units were ripped off and the front wing was detatched. However, the nose itself seemed to be relatively intact.

Montoya was freed from the car after ten minutes and he was able to walk away, although he appeared to have a slight limp. He was taken to the medical centre for an examination but he indicated to bystanders that he was fine.

Trackside marshals and Williams mechanics ensured no photographs were taken at the scene or around the garage area.
