A perfect lap for Monteiro, despite a daring strategy
Jordan driver Tiago Monteiro qualified for Sunday afternoon's USGP with a heavy fuel load on board his Toyota powered Jordan EJ15, but this did not stop the Portuguese driver from carrying out an almost perfect qualifying lap.
Tiago secured 17th place on the grid and is confident of being able to progress well in the 73 lap race. "It was a very clean qualifying lap, without any mistakes, which was excellent for many reasons," explained Tiago.
"Particularly taking into account the fact that I was out in a car that was seriously weighed down with a heavy fuel load. Therefore I will carry out my first pit stop rather late in race. I am pleased with this result because we have progressed well throughout the weekend and also because I have worked in perfect harmony with my engineer, Brad Joyce."
Tiago was only 2.066 seconds behind Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher, who was the fastest Bridgestone runner of the afternoon.
The Portuguese driver did not take any risks in the first sector, as the track was slippery, but his skill came to the fore in the second sector (the technical portion of the circuit), where he pulled out a half a second gap to his team mate! Tiago only has one concern, the start...
"Indeed, the start will be difficult because the drivers behind me are much lighter and therefore will have the perfect opportunity to roar away from the grid and get past me. Therefore it will be necessary for me to resist, because my benefits will only become apparent mid race after the fuel load decreases."
