Minardi boss Paul Stoddart has confirmed he is in discussions with Jos Verstappen for the Dutchman's services in 2003. Former Arrows driver Verstappen was dumped by the team in favour of Heinz-Harald Frentzen at the beginning of this season and has been chasing an F1 drive ever since.

"We are in very serious discussions with Verstappen's management, he's a friend and I'd dearly love to run him," said Stoddart, who is also interested in Brit Justin Wilson. However, he's made it clear that drivers with sponsorship behind them are a must-have.

"I've made no secret of the fact that I would love to run Justin and if I could run Jos and Justin that would be a great line-up," Stoddart revealed. "Having said that, it is inescapable that next year's drivers will have to bring some money to the team."

"It would be wrong to call them pay drivers because the names I'm mentioning are very serious drivers; better to say drivers whose sponsorship they would like to place with Minardi."

With Mark Webber thought to be on his way to Jaguar and Alex Yoong reportedly not being taken on as race driver next year, Minardi provisionally have two seats to fill for 2003. BAR test driver Anthony Davidson and American Bryan Herta have also been linked with a deal. Another American, Townsend Bell, and current at-a-loose-end Arrows driver Enrique Bernoldi are yet more names being mentioned.
