Minardi F1, the longtime backmarker team owned and run by Gian Carlo Minardi is continuing to look for a buyer to enable it to compete at the front of the grid.

Minardi's primary sponsor for the 2000 season, the Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica, was earlier to believed to be interested in acquiring Minardi, but appears now to have decided against a Minardi acquisition.

The remaining buyer candidates are believed to include investor groups from both the United States and Europe.

In addition, it is rumoured that Volkswagen, the largest automobile manufacturer in Europe, may also be interested. Volkswagen's premier marques include Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini, and it is possible that one of these would carry Volkswagen's flag in F1 -- similar to Ford's entry to Formula One under the Jaguar banner.
