Test Programme Shifts Into High Gear
VALENCIA, SPAIN, February 5, 2002 - Following a highly successful shakedown of its 2002 Grand Prix challenger at Imola last Friday, KL Minardi Asiatech today moved to the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, near Valencia. The Faenza-based team has brought two chassis to the Spanish track, the latest PS02, and a PS01. Weather delays meant the test programme did not get under way until the afternoon, when new signing, Mark Webber, enjoyed his first taste of the Asiatech-powered PS02 chassis. Alex Yoong, who drove the latest car during its initial run last week, today took the wheel of the PS01 to carry out durability work and continue hardware and software development.
The Valencia programme is scheduled to continue Wednesday and Thursday, and with its pre-season programme now in full swing, KL Minardi Asiatech next week moves to the Circuit de Catalunya, close to Barcelona, for an intensive four-day test, when the second of the team's PS02 chassis is due to make its first appearance.
"We had a good finish to today after a slow start, not helped by the team being badly delayed by fog in Italy. Once here, the guys worked really hard to get everything prepared. As a result, we were able to lap in the new car after lunch, and already we've been able to make some improvements. I'm satisfied with this first session, and am now looking forward to tomorrow. With more running, we'll have a better opportunity to assess the potential of the new car."
"The main thing today was to run the new car, and everyone was really concentrating on that. It was still good to go out and run some laps in the old car, though, as it's a benefit for me to pile up as many miles as I can at this stage."
ANDY TILLEY, Chief Engineer, KL Minardi Asiatech
"Once the team arrived after the fog-delay at Malpensa Airport, we had a good afternoon of testing, carrying out systems checks on the PS02 chassis and the new Asiatech engine. We made a couple of short runs at the end of the day, just to begin to understand a little more about the car, and everything has gone very well."
