Benetton Formula One has announced the signing of Mike Gascoyne to its technical team. Gascoyne will join the team on a five-year contract starting in July 2000.

"Renault have given me the task to build a team that can win the world championship," said Flavio Briatore, MD, Benetton F1. " We have a good team here but I need to add the best of the best to make it strong."

Pat Symonds, Benetton's Technical Director, added: "I have known and respected Mike for many years and am delighted that he will be joining us to strengthen our technical department. This signing is part of our long term strategy to create a world championship winning team. I thoroughly look forward to working with him."

Gascoyne leaves Jordan Grand Prix, where he has been chief designer since 1998. He previously worked at Tyrrell, Sauber and McLaren.
