Mercedes F1 hits big sustainability milestone on road to Net Zero

The Mercedes Formula 1 team has confirmed that it reached a sustainability milestone during the 2025 European season, as it achieved 99% coverage of HVO100 biofuel.

The Brackley outfit has increased HVO100 (hydrotreated vegetable oil) coverage in its internal combustion engine trucks since 2022. According to the team, the biofuel reduced lifecycle emissions by up to 81% compared with standard diesel.

“Our sustainability strategy is built on innovation on and off the track, and the expansion of HVO100 across 99% of our European season’s race and marketing truck logistics is testament to this," head of sustainability Alice Ashpitel said.

“Every kilometre travelled using biofuel moves us closer to Net Zero by 2040, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable high performance. We are proud to be driving change, not just on track, but across every part of our operations.

“In line with our ambition to become one of the most sustainable global professional sports teams, we are committed to achieving Net Zero for total Race Team Control emissions by 2030 and full Net Zero across all scopes by 2040.”

The next phase in Mercedes' sustainability plan involves expanding the use of HVO100 for races outside of Europe and integrating the Mercedes-Benz Trucks e-fleet where possible.

In July 2025, F1 confirmed that it was on track to be Net Zero by 2030, after delivering a 26% reduction in carbon emissions by the end of 2024. 

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said at the time: “We are strongly committed to achieving Net Zero by 2030. It is a concrete goal, already visible in the significant reduction of our sport's carbon footprint. While continuing to grow globally, we have shown that sustainable development is possible and that the strategies we have adopted are yielding tangible results.

“Formula 1 has always been synonymous with innovation and the desire to improve. Once again, this mentality has allowed us to make important progress, not only for those who work in this world, but also for society as a whole.

“We will continue to pursue our projects and next year we will introduce new actions, such as the use of advanced sustainable fuels in all Formula 1 cars, a step that also opens up significant opportunities for road cars and other means of transport.
