Allan McNish believes his 2003 test role with Renault is the best place for him to be to remind the other teams of his talents. Dropped by Toyota after his debut year in F1, McNish was debating a move to the US Indy Car series when it seemed an F1 race seat was unforthcoming. However, Renault were keen to secure his services as test driver and the Scot decided staying in F1 was his best option.

"It is definitely the best thing to do and gives me the right environment to showcase my abilities," he said at the Autosport International show in the UK this weekend. "It will be a 17-time reminder for all the teams in the pit lane. It keeps me in the shop window, because I'm going to be driving for a competitive team in a very good car."

Renault also appointed Franck Montagny as test driver with McNish and the pair will deputize for race drivers Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso. McNish hopes keeping himself on track will lead to more options for the future: "It allows me to build on what I achieved last year," he explained. "I will be in the best position if anything else comes along."
