McLaren reveals F1 concept car

McLaren has revealed images of a stunning concept Formula 1 car of the future that it believes would take the sport into a new technological era.

The McLaren MP4-X is the brainchild of McLaren Applied Technologies, which was given the task of creating an F1 car without any design constraints.

The car features advanced venturi tunnels underneath to deliver ground effect, as well as full active aero – with moveable wings that flip up for corners but go flat on the straights.

It is powered by an all-eletric hybrid motor – which can be boosted by induction loops at the track – and features innovation like tyre wear monitoring systems and electronic branding.

John Allert, Group Brand Director for the McLaren Technology Group, said: “With the futuristic McLaren MP4-X concept race car, we wanted to peer into the future and imagine the art of the possible.

“We have combined a number of F1’s key ingredients – speed, excitement and performance, with the sport’s emerging narratives - such as enclosed cockpits to enhance driver safety, and hybrid power technologies."

He added: “Formula 1 is the ultimate gladiatorial sport, and the future we envisage will be a high tech, high performance showcase that excites fans like no other sport.”
