Ron Dennis confirmed today that an offer has been made to Jaguar for the services of McLaren test driver Alex Wurz. Jaguar made it public recently that Antonio Pizzonia's position was under review and targeted Wurz as his replacement, should that be necessary. A lot depended on the Brazilian's performance at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix but Pizzonia has not done too well so far.

He managed to run over a mechanic in the pit lane, incurred two fines for speeding and only managed sixteenth on the grid in today's qualifying session, all of which does not bode well. Jaguar managing director David Pitchforth said this morning that he could not categorically say that Pizzonia would be with the team for the rest of the season and, in a rather telling comment, said Antonio was a 'fantastic test driver'.

McLaren boss Dennis wouldn't reveal details of the offer to release Wurz from his test driver position but it's now up to Jaguar. "We were approached by Jaguar but they did not wait for a response before approaching Alex, which is not particularly correct," he said. "We discussed the whole thing internally and we have always had a provision with our third driver of never standing in the way of their race careers."

"We have considered the position and we have made a proposal to Jaguar that could see Alex go there. It is now up to them to accept it or not. We have made the position clear. It is not negotiable. It is a fair reflection of what we believe he is worth."
