According to Auto Motor und Sport, the cockpit problems with the MP4-10 are such that neither Mansell nor Hakkinen can use their upper arms to help steer the car, they are limited to whatever movement they can achieve from the elbows down. McLaren hopes to fix the problem by getting rid of 3 cm's worth of cockpit paneling/seat padding on either side of the drivers` shoulders. If this does not work, new monocoques will have to be designed and built. The earliest that these new tubs could be used would be at the San Marino GP.

As if that was not enough, the car has been impossible to balance; Either the front can be made to grip, or the rear, but not both. The likely suspect is -- you guessed it -- the airbox-mounted wing.
