Story behind the photo: Flash Max grabs all the attention
Oct 3, 2017, 3:31 PM

After every grand prix, ace photographer Mark Sutton of Sutton Images gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to cover Formula 1 from behind the lens.

Max Verstappen claimed a second win in his short Formula 1 career in Malaysia. After overtaking Lewis Hamilton early on, he was quickly away in the distance lapping nearly a second a lap quicker.

There were great celebrations following the race, but I waited until the team celebrations for something a bit different by shooting from the media centre window looking down on the throng with my lens stuck firmly against the glass.

I waited for the best moment, and this came as Max was lifted by chief mechanic Nigel – a huge guy with lots of muscle! – and you can see all the photographers fighting for position to get the right angle.

At this particular moment, a flash pops on Max’s face to lighten the subject and create this emotional image of the race winner celebrating with his trophy aloft.
