Porsche has issued a statement on the condition of former F1 driver Mark Webber, who crashed heavily in the closing stages of the World Endurance Championship race in Sao Paolo on Sunday.

Webber, twice a winner of the Brazilian Grand Prix on the Interlagos circuit, lost control of his Porsche 919 hybrid in the final corner and hit the barriers. The team has yet to establish a cause for the accident.

A statement said that Webber "spent the night in a local hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, after his accident in the six-hour race on Sunday. He sustained bruising and concussion. Mark is still under observation at the hospital with his team-mates and colleagues visiting him. He is set to return to the UK later this week."

Webber described himself as "quite sore this morning, I am pretty bruised and have got a stinking headache.

"I’ve got no recollection of the accident or how it happened. The team is looking into the details to find out more. Thanks to the medical team at the track and here at the hospital, who did a great job and are looking after me very well.”

“On a positive note, it’s great that the boys in the number 14 car managed to bring home the victory, which is a fantastic way to finish off the season. I’m already looking forward to getting out there again next year."

Webber had started the race from pole position at the end of what has been quite a tough first season for the Australian in the category since retiring from F1 at the end of last year.
