Bridgestone keeps its cool to put Ferrari on pole in sweltering Malaysia
As temperatures reached the roaring fifties on track this afternoon, Bridgestone Motorsport's Potenza Formula One tyres passed yet another major test with flying colours as they assisted Michael Schumacher to his fifth pole position at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Brazilian teammate Rubens Barrichello was also hot on the pace and he will line up on tomorrow's grid in third place ahead of fellow Bridgestone equipped drivers Felipe Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella of Sauber Petronas, who line up on the sixth row.
One of the hottest races on the calendar, the extreme temperatures and humidity are a real test of man, machine and rubber. It seems that Bridgestone's rivals can now expect a real showdown come rain or shine.
Hisao Suganuma, Technical Manager of Bridgestone Motorsport:
"I'm delighted to see Michael on pole and Rubens third on the grid after qualifying in such hot temperatures. It's also very important to be at the front to avoid unnecessary risks overtaking. Our tyre performance was excellent in these extreme temperatures and clearly Bridgestone was the tyre to be on today in the heat. This was backed up by a solid performance by Sauber's drivers and I expect them to have a competitive race tomorrow along with Jordan and Minardi. I'm very much looking forward to the race."
Ross Brawn, Technical Director of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro:
"We're very happy to be on pole. The gap is bigger than I expected to be honest but it was a perfect lap by Michael and his engineers did a great job to set the car up the balance was perfect. We'll have to wait until the race to see what strategies other people are on of course but we're comfortable with our approach so far. A lot can happen tomorrow: the tyres will be crucial and there's a chance of some rain even. But, we have a very good car and very good Bridgestone tyres."
