Kevin Magnussen took full blame for his accident during second practice for the Australian Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver lost the rear of his car under braking for Turn 6 and ended up crashing against the tyre barrier.
As as result of the damage, the Dane was unable to continue driving and finished at the bottom of the times with just four laps covered.
"There was nothing on the track. It was just me," said Magnussen of the accident.
"I tried to push the braking and lost the rear on the entry, and it snapped in a difficult time and that's when I pointed the car towards the wall and couldn't hold it.
"It was just a driver mistake."
Magnussen, standing in for Fernando Alonso this weekend, had completed only seven laps in the morning session.
He was at least encouraged by the handling - if not the pace - of his car.
"We are obviously not fast but it feels good and we're not too far off where I think the optimum balance in the car will be," he said.
"Hopefully we can get a better idea tomorrow and see what we can do.
"If we can finish I don't know where we will finish. It's quite difficult to predict."
