In a surprise move, Ferrari announced that an agreement was signed with Luciano Burti who will join Scuderia Ferrari for the 2002 season as a test driver, working alongside Luca Badoer. A spokesperson for the Italian team confirmed that Burti will take up testing duties alongside regular tester Luca Badoer.

The Brazilian Formula 1 driver started 2001 with Jaguar Racing before moving to Prost Grand Prix. He survived a terrible crash at the last Belgian Grand Prix in September, when his Prost car slammed into a tire wall at 190 mph. The accident left him suffering from severe cerebral bruising and concussion. The smash meant he was ruled out for the rest of the season after doctors warned him he risked further injury if he drove again.

Burti, a good friend of Ferrari race driver Rubens Barrichello, has struck gold with a testing deal with the World Champion team.
