Lotus Confirms Eric Bernard

After recent speculation, Team Lotus confirms that Eric Bernard will drive for the team during the forthcoming European Grand Prix at Jerez, alongside Alessandro Zanardi.

Thirty year old Bernard first competed in Formula One in 1989, driving at Paul Ricard and Silverstone for Larrousse. He then completed the 1990 and 1991 seasons for the French team but suffered ankle injuries during practice for the 1991 Japanese Grand Prix, which severely interrupted his career.

Eric returned to the F1 fold in 1993 as test driver for Ligier, alongside Olivier Panis at Ligier, his best result of the season being an excellent third place at Hockenheim.

Johnny Herbert has been released from his contract.

Peter Collins, Managing Director:

"I am delighted that Alessandro will be leading the team this weekend and believe that his commitment and ability will allow us to realise the full potential of the 109 with the new specification engine. I look forward to a successful weekend."

Eric Bernard:
