Dec 14, 2014, 11:46 PM

F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was voted by the British public the BBC Sport Personality of the Year tonight at a ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland.

F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was voted by the British public the BBC Sport Personality of the Year tonight at a ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland.

Hamilton was a runaway winner, beating golfer Rory McIlroy and runner Jo Pavey, with a clear majority - 34% of the vote.

The 29 year old took 209,920 of the 620,932 votes, with McIlroy on 123,745 (20%) and Pavey 99,913 (16%).

The award is one of the most prestigious in the British sporting world and has been won in the past by F1 champions Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell and Sir Jackie Stewart.

It was an award that Hamilton had openly admitted since clinching the title in Abu Dhabi last month that he was very keen to win, having missed out in his previous world championship year 2008, to multiple Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy.

"I'm very proud to be here among all these greats," said Hamilton. "I really didn't expect this. I couldn't have done this without my amazing team and my family. Tonight is a reminder of how many great sportsmen we have here in this country. I came here a few years ago and it this is just a dream.

"Thanks to the fans, it's been an amazing year. I feel so proud to carry the Union Jack and I hope I can continue to make you proud."

Hamilton was accompanied to the ceremony by his brother Nick, who has started racing himself despite his disability and is working to get a budget to race in the BTCC next season. Hamilton had earlier arrived at the venue in Glasgow with his dog Roscoe, causing a stir on the red carpet before the ceremony started..

He had come in from Los Angeles for the ceremony and was heading back there afterwards for a holiday.
