Kvyat says 'personalising' Toro Rosso car will bring rewards
Daniil Kvyat thinks there will be more to come from himself and Toro Rosso once he has managed to 'personalise' his car.
While Max Verstappen grabbed headlines with a historic win on his Red Bull debut in Spain last weekend, Kvyat did well to score a point on his return to his Faenza-based team.
The Russian also clocked the fastest lap of the race – which was a first for both him and his outfit.
And he is positive about how things can shape up over the remainder of the campaign, especially with an important day of testing at Barcelona today.
“I think I need to personalise the car, first of all, a bit more, because in practice we weren’t good,” he said.
“I generally take a bit too much time to get used to [a car], but the car can become better.”
Kvyat feels the Barcelona test comes at the right time for him to go through the critical phase of adapting to a new car.
“Yes, absolutely,” he said on testing. “It will be important to get a good test, and to try as many things as possible.
“It will be crucial [for me] to try things which I would like to see and experience. A little bit of everything needs optimising for myself and it should be good.
“First is the feeling for the driver, everyone has particular requirements in this area, [and] once we are good and are able to achieve it, I think I’ll be a lot more comfortable with the car.”
Crucial to finish the race
While the Russian finished a lap down to the leaders in Spain, Kvyat thinks it was important that he took the chequered flag so he could experience race conditions.
“It was crucial to finish the whole race, because it is important to understand the car,” he continued.
“[Also] to see the behaviour of the car, how it handles in race conditions and see how it is doing the best.
“It was pretty good. [I had a] nice feeling with the car and so I think the future races will be a little bit better,” he adds.
“I am understanding the car quite a lot, so I don’t feel down at the moment. I just have to be patient and try to squeeze everything in races even more.”
