Daniil Kvyat says he has been impressed by the potential of the Toro Rosso package in his return to the team in Spanish Grand Prix practice.

Kvyat settled in well on his return to Toro Rosso today, and while he was a modest 12th and 15th in the two sessions, he was happy with progress.

Kvyat's quick lap in FP2 was compromised by the tyres not being up to temperature, but Carlos Sainz indicated the potential of the package with fifth place.

"The general feeling with the car is growing each lap," Kvyat said. "There are a few things where we can sharpen some places, working on details.

"I think Toro Rosso has a very competitive package, to be honest. One car warmed up the tyres, one car didn't warm up the tyres, and the car that warmed up the tyres looked very competitive.

"So hopefully I will join the competitive pack tomorrow."

Kvyat is impressed by the Ferrari engine, and the way it works with the STR chassis.

"I think Ferrari has a very big potential as well, it's a very smooth power unit, I was very pleased with how it works. It felt like it's all-in-all a more balanced thing that you have behind yourself.

"Of course you still have to be able to adjust it the grip level you have and so on, the chassis is always dependent.

"There are more specific details in the power unit that are quite interesting as well. I think having driven both of them I think I can actually bring something interesting.

"The work is already ongoing, and we are finding more and more things both in the power unit and on the chassis side. Like I said I would like to finally feel the car when the tyres are fully ready, you know.

"That's something that we missed today, but we know the direction we are moving. Tomorrow should not be an easy fix, but if we put enough effort in it, it should be everything in the right way."

The Russian insisted that he already feels very comfortable in his new home.

"Back in 2014 when I was leaving it felt like leaving home, now it felt like I came back, but it's not that easy. The form is always changing, as well, it's two years almost gone.

"Toro Rosso is a grown-up team now, and now I need also to adjust to their kind of preference in terms of all the chassis work and engine work and so on, and also to feel how to drive it you need to find the limit. It doesn't happen unfortunately in one session."
