Kvyat hails "crucial" day of testing with Toro Rosso

Daniil Kvyat says Wednesday's productive day of testing at Barcelona was "crucial" for him in making progress understanding the Toro Rosso F1 car.

Kvyat was moved to the Faenza-based team for the Spanish Grand Prix, having raced with Red Bull in 2015 and in the first four races of the season.

The Russian finished in 10th pace in the Barcelona race, four places behind teammate Carlos Sainz.

Kvyat said he needed more time to be able to extract the best from the car, and he admitted today's 116 laps were very important to him.

"It was quite crucial," said Kvyat. "Obviously the more laps I can get in this new car the more laps I can get familiar with it.

"Obviously I got more familiarisation, I did some things to suit my driving style a bit better, so I think it was a good combination all together. Very important.

"I managed to do many important laps today - 116 - I guess my longest day in F1.

"I'm pretty happy about how it went, a lot of information, a lot of things I tried which hopefully we will be able to put on the car for Monaco next week and will work."

The Toro Rosso driver reckons next week's Monaco Grand Prix will be a good chance for him to see how confident he feels with the car.

"Obviously here and Monaco are very different tracks," he said. "But let's see, it will be a perfect opportunity because Monaco is a confidence track so will be importance to see how much confidence I have in the car.

"Usually I've been good there so should be OK this time too."

Kvyat caused one of two red flags in today's session when he stopped on track and he said the team was still investigation the cause.

"I don't know, the team is still trying to work out exactly what happened," he added. "Something inside on the back part, we don't know exactly what happened. We'll know tomorrow.

"I think it was precaution. We just lost a bit of power so we said its better to stop and investigated rather than trying to push it, so we decided it was best to do it that way."
