Kubica back in hospital with fractured leg after fall

Ex-Lotus driver Robert Kubica has fractured his right leg today, the same leg that was badly fractured during his rally crash early 2011.

Reports say the Polish driver lost his footing in the garden of his house in Pietrasanta, Italy and was taken to a nearby hospital in Viareggio.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reported x-ray scans showed he had sustained a micro fracture in his right tibia.

The BBC on the other hand reported Kubica ‘needs an operation to have a metal screw inserted just above his ankle and then faces a month in plaster’.

ANSA reported Kubica has already left the Viareggio hospital and indicated he would be transferred to the Pietra Ligure hospital where he was treated after his almost fatal crash last year.

Kubica after his accident spent almost two months in the Pietra Ligure hospital where his horrible injuries were treated by hand surgeon Igor Rossello.

After numerous operations to improve the mobility of his right elbow, wrist and hand, his rehabilitation was overseen by Italian Dr Riccardo Ceccarelli, but early December 2011 Kubica and Ceccarelli split as a result of differences in terms of his rehabilitation.

“I can confirm that there were differing views as to the next phase of rehabilitation,” the Italian doctor at the time stated. It is unknown who is now in charge of Kubica’s rehabilitation program.

In November Kubica already failed to make the deadline imposed by Eric Boullier, Team Principal of the Lotus Renault team (now Lotus) and this season Kimi Raikkonen will be behind the wheel of the black and gold car.

There have also been reports Ferrari and Red Bull might be interested in the 27-year old driver, Luca di Montezemolo recently admitted Kubica was ‘as possibility’ but also stated, "We'll have to see how he comes back from his accident."

Again a major setback for Kubica, as he already had to give up his hopes to be fit again for the 2012 season after he had been struggling to recover from his injuries.
