Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen beat Mercedes junior Esteban Ocon to the top of the timesheets as Formula 1’s final in-season test of the 2016 season drew to a close at Silverstone today.

Raikkonen, who took over from Charles Leclerc at the wheel of the SF-16H, put in a best time of 1m30.665s, which was 0.547s quicker than Ocon, as he completed 103 laps of the Northamptonshire track.

Ocon, who is on-loan from Mercedes as Renault’s reserve driver for this season, racked up another 139 laps at the wheel of the WO7 after managing 123 yesterday. It looked like the Frenchman’s best time from the morning session, a 1m31.212s, would be the day’s quickest time as the weather closed in during the afternoon running. But when the track dried out, Raikkonen moved to the top of the times on the soft Pirelli rubber with just under an hour of the day’s running remaining.

Pierre Gasly ended the day third for Red Bull, 0.7s adrift of Raikkonen, a massive improvement over yesterday’s results where the French GP2 driver was over 12 seconds behind Fernando Alonso’s best effort.

Nikita Mazepin finished fourth for Force India after undertaking both days of the test for the Silverstone-based squad.

Stoffel Vandoorne was fifth for McLaren as he took over from Alonso at the wheel of the MP4-31. The Belgian driver, who finished tenth at the Bahrain Grand Prix in a one-off appearance in place of the injured double world champion earlier this year, completed 114 laps and ended up 0.5s slower than Alonso’s headline time from yesterday.

“We’ve had quite a successful day,” he said afterwards. “A lot of aero stuff to do this morning and then after that I got some good runs in. We’ve been testing various new systems we’ve got on the car. It’s the final day of in-season testing so there’s always a lot on the programme to complete – not just aero and set-up but also power unit-related work.

“We weren’t too rain-affected and made the most of the dry conditions today. The car felt positive and I could push straight away, which is always a nice feeling after a few months out of the cockpit. We pressed on with a lot of development to try and resolve some of the issues we had during the British Grand Prix weekend, which wasn’t always easy as the wind changes a lot here as the day goes on and it makes quite a big difference to car balance.

“Luckily, we had a lot of tyres left because of all the rain yesterday, so in between set-up changes we tried to get as many laps in as possible, and I’m pleased with how today has gone.”

Valtteri Bottas

Valtteri Bottas took over at Williams’ from development driver and GP2 racer Alex Lynn, and finished the day in sixth place, one place ahead of Haas F1 junior Santino Ferrucci. Bottas trialled Williams' double-decker rear wing, which first appeared at the Barcelona in-season test that followed the Spanish Grand Prix.

Jolyon Palmer was eighth fastest for Renault, with Sergio Sette Camara ninth for Toro Rosso. The Brazilian Red Bull junior was making his debut F1 appearance and he completed 82 laps for the Italian team after taking over from Carlos Sainz.

Manor reserve driver Jordan King was tenth fastest, and the team’s regular race driver Pascal Wehrlein brought up the rear of field after putting in another 128 laps aboard Mercedes’ 2014 car fitted with special tyres containing aspects of Pirelli’s 2017 compounds.
