Jules Bianchi: A career in pictures
Motorsport.com takes a look back at the career of Jules Bianchi in pictures following the tragic news of his death after injuries sustained in last year's Japanese Grand Prix.
The popular Frenchman's single-seater journey started in 2007, when in his first year in French Formula Renault 2.0, he won the championship with five wins and 11 podium finishes to his credit with SG Formula team.
Following this in 2008, he competed in the Formula 3 Euro Series, where he finished third as a rookie in the championship which was won by another future Formula 1 star, Nico Hulkenberg.
During the season, he notched up two wins and seven podiums driving for ART Grand Prix.
In the same season, he drove in the Masters of Formula 3 at Zolder, where he took victory from Hulkenberg and Jon Lancaster.
Moving on to the 2009 season, Jules continued racing in the F3 Euro Series and dominated, registering nine wins and 12 podium finishes in 20 races to seal the title.
In the same year, he got a taste of his childhood dream, driving Ferrari's F1 car for the first time. Impressed with his drive, the Maranello outfit signed him up as part of its Driver Academy.
After competing briefly in the GP2 Asia series in 2009-10, he did a full GP2 season in 2010 with ART Grand Prix, finishing third in the championship behind Pastor Maldonado and Sergio Perez.
The goal in his life was always to be Number 1.
For the 2011 season, Bianchi remained in the GP2 Series with Lotus ART, again finishing third in the championship, this time behind Romain Grosjean and Luca Filippi.
Alongside his GP2 commitments, Bianchi was officially confirmed as the Ferrari test driver for the 2011 season.
Winning races was always a joy - here he is at Silverstone after winning in GP2.
In 2011, he also competed in the GP2 Asia series, where he finished second to Romain Grosjean notching up a win and two podiums.
A fresh new season and a fresh new start, as Bianchi moved to a test driver role at Sahara Force India F1 team for 2012.
He combined his Force India duties with an assault on the Formula Renault 3.5 series, where he racked up three wins and eight podiums under his belt and lost out on the title to Robin Frijns in controversial style in the final race at Barcelona.
After testing for Force India in the winterMarussia announced that Jules Bianchi would drive for them in the 2013 F1 season in place of Luiz Razia. He made his debut in 2013 Australian Grand Prix.
Bianchi's first Formula 1 race of his career: starting 19th on the grid, he eventually finished 15th at Melbourne.
Bianchi shone in his first Formula 1 season; 13th was his best finish, a result he achieved at Malaysia.
