Honda Motor Co Ltd has confirmed one of the pitlane's worst kept secrets - that Jordan is to run full works Honda engines next season, alongside current works team British American Racing. Takeo Fukui of Honda said "Along with our joint development of chassis technology with BAR, supplying works engines to Jordan represents a new challenge in Honda's third period of participation in F1. Through these efforts, we will continue to do our utmost to meet the expectations of motor sports fans. In addition, we will continue our challenge in the American CART series and the Motorcycle World Championship series with the same level of commitment as the present."

In addition, we will continue our challenge in the American CART series and the Motorcycle World Championship series with the same level of commitment as the present." This is seen as a potential blow to British American Racing's effort, as they had a contract for exclusivity of the works engine, and Honda have said that they made their decision after a proposal by Jordan. Honda are at pains to stress that the teams will 'supply identical specification works engines to both BAR and Jordan'.

Jordan delighted with Honda deal

Eddie Jordan has spoken on the Honda deal, and the team have revealed that it is a 'long erm contract starting from the 2001 season'. This puts paid to suggestions of a GM deal in the pipeline.

Eddie Jordan said "This is a massive breakthrough for Benson & Hedges Jordan. To have the support and commitment of Honda gives renewed credibility to our ambitions to win the World Championship. I believe that Jordan-Honda now represents the most exciting technical package for the years ahead.

"This is without doubt the biggest ever deal for Jordan Grand Prix and a tribute to the hard work put in by everyone at the factory over the years. We know we've got to work harder still to fulfil the potential. There can be no excuses though, everything is in place to win championships.

"I would like to thank Mr Hirotoshi Honda and Mugen for their great support during the past three years and their encouragement in creating this platform for the future."
