Total Jordan Peugeot Team Owner Eddie Jordan was in buoyant mood today at the official launch of his new GBL3 million car, the Jordan-Peugeot 195. In addition to unveiling the radically new 200mph machine - the first F1 car to be seen this year - he also revealed an exciting sponsor line-up for Formula One's fastest rising team - which includes the Government of Ireland.
Jordan Grand Prix, who finished 5th in the 1994 World Championship, announced last year that they were teaming up with international oil company, Total, and French auto-giant, Peugeot, in a bid to win top honours in 1995. "The benefits of our involvement with Total and Peugeot are already evident, both financially and technically, in the package we have put together for 1995" Eddie Jordan confirmed. "In Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine we also have two of the sport's most promising drivers" he added, "and the final part of the jigsaw has come together today with the launch of our new car. Everything is now in place for 1995, and I think that the combination of these elements presents us with our best opportunity yet for success. I'm extremely excited about the year ahead" he concluded.
Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Director of Peugeot Sport, echoed Jordan's sentiments about the forthcoming season. "I am expecting a lot from our second year in Formula One" he said. "There are three new elements this year - firstly there are the new technical regulations governing the design of both the engines and the cars, then there is our new partnership with Jordan and thirdly there is our new fuel supplier, Total. That's a lot of new things to take into consideration, but despite all these changes I have lots of confidence in Eddie Jordan's team and in Peugeot Sport. Let's not forget the drivers either who, I hope, will succeed in getting to the top spot on the rostrum at least once this year."
The Jordan-Peugeot 195, in which Barrichello and Irvine will be vying to reach that top spot, incorporates new safety features, state-of-the-art carbon-fibre suspension, a revised aerodynamic package, and an electro-hydraulically controlled gearbox which enables the driver to change from first to seventh gear in 0.15 seconds. The car also carries the colours of a host of organisations which have chosen to support the team's efforts. Mr Enda Kenny TD, who heads up the Irish Ministry of Tourism and Trade, flew in specially from Dublin to announce his Government's continued backing for Jordan Grand Prix.
"As an Irishman I naturally feel extremely proud that the Irish Government should choose to renew its support" said Eddie. "It's also good to retain an association with long-term sponsors such as Marlboro with whom I have had a relationship for almost two decades now. I am particularly pleased to welcome several new sponsors to the team this season, such as Ape, Beta, ICL and Polti" Eddie continued. "We have always prided ourselves on being a free-spirited team. As such we do our utmost to provide ease of access from a media and marketing point of view, and to present a platform which offers our sponsors unequalled potential for worldwide awareness."
That attitude has ensured the team's continued commercial growth in an economically unsecure environment, and attracted backing from companies like Total, who chose to enter the Grand Prix arena for the first time with Jordan. "Total is proud to join the world of Formula One together with Peugeot and Jordan as part of a young, motivated and promising team" said Chairman and Chief Executive of Total Refining and Marketing Jean-Paul Vettier, who was also present at today's launch. "The entire Group is fully committed to this new and exciting challenge" he added.
Total Jordan Peugeot are set to run the new car for the first time at Silverstone Circuit next week, prior to departing for Jerez in Spain to continue their testing programme.
