Lotus development driver Carmen Jorda believes a Formula 1-style championship only for women would be a "fantastic" idea.

Although the idea, proposed by Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone during the Malaysian Grand Prix, has received a mixed response, Jorda reckons it would be highly popular.

Jorda believes the championship could help women get into motorsport, as she thinks men are trying to push female racers down.

"Because they all dream of winning, and they believe that a woman cannot win in F1," she told the official Formula 1 website when asked why no more sponsors are pushing to have more women in F1.

"That's why I think a female F1 championship would be the right answer.

"And there are prominent supporters to that idea, as we have seen lately.

"Should the female championship happen, that would be fantastic!"

Jorda, who failed to score a point in three seasons of GP3, says one of the reasons why there are no more female racers is because there are too many barriers for them.

"When I was very young - I had only started racing in go-karts - I had a podium finish and the guy who ended in P3 started to cry.

"When they asked him why, he said it was because a girl beat him.

"That's the reaction of men everywhere in racing - they try to push you down!"
