Williams Formula 1 team principal James Vowles has opened up about the huge impact that Mercedes CEO and team chief Toto Wolff had on his career.

After spending over a decade at Mercedes as chief strategist and later motorsport strategy director, Vowles made the move to Williams ahead of the 2023 season.

While he recently revealed he had multiple opportunities on the table, the Briton has admitted that the leap to the role of team principal would not have been possible without Wolff's mentorship.

"If we wind back to Mercedes, I had the real fortune with Toto. He is an incredible leader, and he is a really good individual who gave me his time to train me up to effectively lead into that role," Vowles explained to Frankie Langan.

"So without his help, without his support, I simply wouldn't have had the background to be able to do it. So that's number one.

"And whilst I was at Mercedes, I effectively started to take on driver responsibilities, and growing the academy, and taking on more that's involved and associated with being a team principal, but not the full element.

"Of course, we had Toto there and a very good senior management team. Towards the end of '22, Toto and I had a really frank conversation. He's still the best there is out there, and you can look at it today, he is the one out there that has the most accolades behind him.

"And he wasn't at the end of his journey, and that's absolutely fine. He shouldn't be at the end of his journey.

"So it meant that either I slow down my growth, or I go elsewhere. And so at the end of '22 there really was not just Williams, there was four different opportunities on the table."
