After nearly two months away from the circuit, the Jaguar Racing team began its preparations for the 2004 season by giving first F1 tests to Formula 3 star Christian Klien and American Townsend Bell.

On a busy day attended by five teams and eleven drivers, both debutants enjoyed a good amount of mileage on the opening day. Bell completed 63 laps of the circuit in setting a quickest time of 1m12.330s whilst Klien set a quicker time of 1m11.955s from his 54 laps of the circuit.

Regular Jaguar Racing team driver Mark Webber finished the day sixth quickest as the Williams team occupied the top three times on the time sheet.

Juan Pablo Montoya finished fractionally quicker than team-mate Ralf Schumacher and test driver Marc Gene. Alexander Wurz finished fourth quickest in last year's McLaren whilst David Coulthard had to settle for ninth quickest in the new MP4-19.
