Antonio Pizzonia put in a record-breaking performance for the Jaguar Racing team on the last of a three-day test session at the Valencia circuit on Friday.

Taking over testing duties from team-mate Mark Webber, the Brazilian clocked a quickest time of 1m10.08s to eclipse Juan Pablo Montoya's previous best effort by .007s.

Pizzonia ran fewer laps than anybody else on the day but confessed himself satisfied with the handling of the R4 after his 25 laps.

"The car was getting better at Barcelona last week, and we've now made a further step forward," he said. "The balance is a lot better now. Hopefully next week we'll have two cars and we can do some long runs and race simulations."

Although records are a nice footnote, as always, little can be gleaned from testing times. The team knows it still has much work to do before they know where they stand relative to the competition when the trucks turn up in Melbourne, as Jaguar racing spokesman Nav Sidhu explained.

"It's been a very productive three days for us and we used today as a continuation of our set-up and balance on the car and also for tyre work with Melbourne in mind. We have made reasonably good progress but we still have a considerable number of issues to address and fix before qualifying begins on March 8."

Pizzonia will be joined by team-mate Mark Webber for the final pre-season test before Australia, kicking off in Barcelona on Monday.
