Very different marks for the two title contenders headline our assessment of a Monza weekend in which some drivers who have often disappointed in 2018 raised their games.

Lewis Hamilton

Rating: 10

This stands among Hamilton's finest victories, reliant on him making two key overtaking manoeuvres and piling the pressure on a Ferrari team that expected to win. Although Vettel spun after contact with Hamilton, the pass on the opening lap at the second chicane was legitimate. Hamilton's pace advantage over team-mate Valtteri Bottas confirms that this was a weekend on which he was at his irresistible best.

Rating: 7

Bottas's deficit to Hamilton in qualifying was partly thanks to the lack of a tow, but throughout the weekend he didn't look to have the speed of his team-mate. He lost a place to Verstappen at the first corner tamely, then briefly fell behind Grosjean, and couldn't get past Verstappen in the first stint. But he subsequently did a good job to keep Raikkonen behind him and drew a penalty-inducing error out of Verstappen. Dogged rather than dynamic.
