Italian Grand Prix - Monza Friday 11th September: FREE PRACTICE
Both drivers struggled with the balance of the car throughout Free Practice. The afternoon session ended with a heavy downpour which meant that they were unable to complete their set-up programmes. Rubens ended the day in 14th position while Jos was 17th.
Alan Jenkins, Technical Director:
'During an extensive test session last week here at Monza the team arrived at a good balance of the car, set some competitive lap times and felt confident about the race weekend. However, the tyre choice available to us here is different to that which was available at the test and we have in effect had to start from scratch. The new rear construction and the 'green' track conditions initially combined to give the car a lot of understeer. A number of set-up changes were going the right way to restore a balance but we were still on high fuel loads and had some more things to try when the rain started. We expect to be in better shape tomorrow and although Rubens also did some good wet weather running last week, we hope for it to be dry in order to maximise the increased performance of the Series 6 engine.'
Martin Whitaker, Ford European Director of Motorsport:
'Today we ran Series 5 engines in both cars. For tomorrow we will use the latest Series 6 engines - the first time these have been run during a race weekend. Both drivers used the latest specification engine here in testing last week and were pleased with the improved power and driveability.'
Rubens Barrichello: Car no. 18: SF-2/02 Laps: 19 Best time: 1:28.066
'I am disappointed with the way things went today because the test last week was very positive. We struggled to achieve a good balance during the dry running that we did before the rain came. The new tyre is different to the one we ran in the test which means we now have to learn more about how it behaves with the car in race trim. It looks like it will be raining again tomorrow so who knows, our situation may improve for qualifying. We will probably have a chance to do some wet weather running tomorrow morning and concentrate on getting the race set-up right.'
Jos Verstappen: Car no.19: SF-2/03 Laps: 14 Best time: 1:28.606
'The track was very fast and very slippery this morning. I delayed my first run until the track had been cleaned a little but I'm not totally happy with the way the car feels. I have some understeer which is disappointing because we managed to control it during last week's test. We have tried different set-ups today but like everybody else our work was cut short by the rain in the afternoon. However we still have some time left to find improvement before tomorrow's qualifying.' T-car: SF-2/01
