Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld finished in 13th and 17th places respectively after today's first free practice sessions for the Italian Grand Prix.

Nick Heidfeld:

"My car was very difficult today. It had low grip in general, and I could feel the chassis bottoming many times on the road even though it shouldn't have done that at the ride heights we were running. I can't explain why this happened so we need to investigate that."

Felipe Massa:

"This morning my car felt pretty good when I was seventh quickest, and we had taken a definite step forward since the test last week when the handling felt quite nervous. This afternoon we went a different way on set-up and I lacked grip and was slower. I think for sure that tomorrow we should go in the direction we went this morning when the balance and grip were good."

Peter Sauber (Team Principal):

"Felipe's position is about what we expected after the test last week, but we need to analyse why there is such a gap between his time and Nick's."

Both drivers tried the HANS (Head and Neck Support) safety collar today, the first time that it has appeared at an official Formula One race meeting. Felipe said: "I had no problems at all with it, and I'm pretty sure that I'm going to wear it in the race."
