Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine is perhaps as well known for his opinions off track as his actions on it; he may be right or he may be wrong but he's rarely short of something to say. His latest comment is on Renault and he thinks it wouldn't be a surprise to see them on the podium once or twice this season.

As Benetton last year the team were below average, finishing a disappointing seventh with ten points, the car was off the pace and difficult to handle. However, Irvine thinks competition for Jaguar will come from the likes of Renault and other midfielders such as Sauber. Much has been made of Toyota entering Formula One with their huge budget but Irvine doesn't think they will do a great deal in their first season.

“ Some people reckon Toyota will cause us problems if it comes straight in and does well, but I doubt that will happen." He said. "I think our competition will come from BAR, Jordan, Sauber, and the team that could be the biggest surprise of the year, Renault. Renault has all the winning ingredients; good infrastructure, good people, and track record of winning. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on the podium a few times in 2002."
