Jaguar's Eddie Irvine will start today's Spanish Grand Prix at the back of the grid after being relegated due to a fuel discrepancy. Irvine had qualified fifteenth in the Jaguar R3 but the fuel sample taken from his car after the session was found to be irregular by scrutineers. A gas chromatography test on the fuel didn't match the earlier sample supplied by Jaguar.

"After having examined the results of this further analysis, the stewards decided to delete all qualifying times of the driver," an FIA statement said.

Irvine's qualifying result has therefore been nullified and he will have to start from twenty-second on the grid for today's race. As a result, team mate Pedro de la Rosa has been elevated to sixteenth.

Irvine and Jaguar have the right to appeal but the Irishman commented: "To be honest it doesn't make much difference given where we were on the grid. But at least this way I might get to overtake some cars tomorrow."
