Mild Seven Benetton Team Hungarian GP / Preview
Pat Symonds, Benetton Formula's Technical Director: BACKGROUND:
"After the high speed circuit at Hockenheim, Budapest is one of the lowest speed and highest downforce circuits where qualifying is all important." THE CIRCUIT:
"Not only Budapest a very slow circuit, but it is extremely difficult to overtake and the race usually ends up in a procession. In the few places it is possible to overtake, it is very difficult to defend this position. For example on the first corner, it is sometimes possible to overtake on the inside of the corner, but then you tend to come out wide and get retaken on the exit. Therefore qualifying and pit-stops are key for a successful race in Budapest." TESTING:
"We decided to test at Silverstone rather than at one of the low speed circuits eventhough we were concentrating on the set-up for Hungary. We ran our new long wheelbase car for the first time and are very happy with the performance, so we will be using it in Budapest. We have designed the long wheelbase car to go hand in hand with the new wider front tyre that Bridgestone will be introducing at this race. We are extremely happy with the overall result. Our drivers have described it as the most significant step forward in development that we have made this year." CONCLUSION:
"We will be going to the race full of confidence for a good grid position and from that a successful race."
